Kandy Esala Perahera

A pageant which has remained an epitome of Buddhist ethos coupled with customs, draws legions of travelers annually who get to witness the decorated inner casket, enshrining the most revered tooth relic of Lord Buddha atop a majestic elephant in ornate robelike costume. Motely folk dance traditions including the celebrated ves dancers are sights to behold and an exhilarating attribute of this procession.  The pageant also pays homage to the chief deities watching over the island and her inhabitants.
